Though I’m no longer living in Atlanta, I am still super stoked that Powerhouse Skates is about to open its doors there! What is Powerhouse Skates, you ask? Well, it is without a doubt going to be the best skate shop in the state of Georgia.
The brainchild of DSDG & Team USA skater Wild Cherry and DSDG skater Deathskull, Powerhouse Skates will bring top quality, skater-approved gear to Atlanta’s roller derby scene. Even more exciting than it being a new place to buy gear, Powerhouse Skates offers something no other shop has: years of first hand derby experience. These ladies have worn this gear, they know from their own experience what works and what doesn’t.
When you’re buying any piece of derby equipment (especially when you’re just starting out) you will always be told to talk to other local rollergirls, to try on their equipment or get their opinions. In the past this has been difficult for newcomers who don’t yet know any rollergirls well enough to approach them. Now, Powerhouse Skates is a shop run by rollergirls who’s job it is to answer the equipment questions only someone who’s jammed, juked, blocked, and fallen on this equipment could answer.
I’ll admit it, i’m pretty jealous that I didn’t get to patronize this shop during my time in Atlanta. It would have really helped me navigate the confusing beginnings of my derby career.
In the Atlanta area there really were only two main options as far as local skate shops that carry roller derby equipment. Those were Skate Escape and Eastside Rollersports. Though I have used them both and they try hard to meet the needs of rollergirls, they simply cannot compare experience-wise to what Powerhouse Skates is offering. Also, from what I’ve seen, Powerhouse Skates has a much nicer facility with space that really allows customers to get a feel for the wheels and skates they’re trying on in-store.
Powerhouse Skate’s Grand Opening is Jan 11th! Go check it out if you’re in the area and keep and eye on them cause I’m sure there will be a lot more to come from this promising new derby business.
